8.2 Scholarship Standing

Students will be considered for scholarships based on the following minimum criteria:

1. Scholarship standing for undergraduate entrance students (who are Canadian citizens or permanent residents graduating from secondary schools within Canada) is defined as a 75% average compiled from the final grades received in secondary school courses required for University admission. In the case of a tie for a competitive recognition that is based solely on academic merit, grades in additional secondary school courses may be considered in determining the recipient.

2. Scholarship standing for undergraduate students is defined as a 75% average over the previous scholarship year and the successful completion of not less than 30 credit hours, or equivalent load hours as recorded in the University’s Student Information System, over that period. In considering students who complete more than 30 credit hours for which numeric grades are awarded, the average on the best 30 credit hours completed will be reviewed. Students who fail one or more courses during the scholarship year, regardless of the number of courses completed, will not be eligible for scholarships.

3. For scholarships that include financial need as a criterion and for bursaries that include scholarship standing as a criterion, scholarship standing for undergraduate students is defined as a 75% average over the previous scholarship year and the successful completion of not less than 24 credit hours over that period. In considering students who complete more than 24 credit hours for which numeric grades are awarded, the average on the best 24 credit hours completed will be reviewed. Students who failed one or more courses during the previous scholarship year, regardless of the number of courses completed, will not be eligible for scholarships.

4. First-class standing for scholarships purposes is defined as a grade point average of 3.5 out of 4.0 over the previous scholarship year.

5. Students transferring to Memorial University of Newfoundland from Universities/Colleges in Canada which are members of Universities Canada and who meet scholarship standing as defined by Memorial University of Newfoundland will be eligible for undergraduate scholarships in the year in which they transfer. Such students must notify the Scholarships, Awards, and Financial Aid Office in writing of their intention to transfer and provide a complete transcript for the year in question.

6. Not all students who meet the above definitions of scholarship standing will receive a scholarship.
